We had heard good reports on Lux but nothing prepared us for how AMAZING it really is. To say we loved it is an understatement. It has everything we wanted and they even had menus with different puree types for different aged infants!
But let’s start with the island - which is where Lux beats so many others hands down. It is huge (longer than the capital Male) with stunning beaches on both sides, so although there are 195 rooms they are well spread out and the island villas all have their own slice of the heavenly beach. The benefit of being a bigger hotel means it can have more restaurants and facilities which gives you plenty of choice. And better than that – if you are on Half or Full Board you can eat in them all.
Next the rooms – we loved them. They all have a beach front spot and from your bed you can gaze at the sea. The Beach Villa’s are a great option for families since they have plenty of space and direct access to the beach, saving you the hassle of packing up a beach bag full of nappies and everything else that normally accompanies little ones. You can even remain on your terrace for a sundowner while your children are happily occupied building sandcastles just in front of you. A number of the beach villas have private pools – if your baby is not yet mobile it’s a great time to take advantage of your own pool without the constant worry of your child falling in. It’s also a great way to remain in your villa, while your child is sleeping, and take advantage of a couple of hours of uninterrupted sunbathing. The terrace on each Villa is perfect for in-villa dining – a far superior way of having dinner than the standard room service eaten of your lap. As you would imagine LUX*Maldives also has some fantastic Water villas, however children under twelve are generally not accepted in the Water Villas. If you are staying in a water villa this is one of the only hotels with enough beach space for you to use as well. Other islands are so small that the beach area is really only for the beach villas.
The beautiful beach, soft sand and lovely child friendly swimming pools are enough to keep most children entertained, however if you would like some time on your own, perhaps to take advantage of the fantastic spa or go diving, the excellent Kids Club (the Nest) is open daily from 9am to 9pm and takes children from three to twelve years old on a complimentary basis. Younger children can also be catered for but you need to book a babysitter to accompany them. Aside from all the normal wonderful kids club facilities the Nest also has a customized dining area so that children can remain for lunch. Older children are not forgotten with their own teen’s club, The Place, kitted out with perfect teenage things such as Wii and play stations. However most children will probably be keener to explore the extensive range of water sports instead – child size wake boards, water skis and snorkeling equipment can all be provided. Children from ten can participate in a licensed diving course and those as young as eight can try scuba diving in the pool.
All ages and tastes are catered for with the wide range of dining options available ranging from Oriental to Asian and Italian (there is even an al fresco pizza restaurant which we loved). Lux has a great Kids Menu as well as the puree menu for infants!
For keen divers there are few places as good as the Maldives and the South Ari Atol is one of the best areas to dive in the country. Some of most beautiful sites are less than an hour from the resort which you reach by dhoni, a traditional Maldivian form of boat, and an experience in itself. The sea around the island is shallow, warm and protected by a reef, which makes it ideal for children to swim in but does mean that for good snorkeling you need to take a boat out to the house reef.
Lux thinks about its guests more than anywhere else. When you are there they want to pamper you. The staff couldn’t be more helpful or cheery and are great with children. We loved the little touches such as an English old style red telephone box from where you can phone home for free. They also hide messages in a bottle around the island for children to hunt for. These have little gifts in them or spa vouchers etc. They have a coconut stall for you to help yourself to fresh coconuts whilst you wander around and they even have a little rest area half way down the island where you help yourself to free soft drinks to recharge you on your walk.
To say we were impressed is an understatement. We loved it and it ticked all the boxes for a family friendly hideaway in the Maldives at a sensible price.
