Our Review

A decidedly decadent boutique hotel where children are in heaven. Let's just quickly start with the surrounding area as this will tell you why Kurland is so great for families. Firstly Plettenberg has stunning beaches, one of the best being just 5 minutes down the hill from Kurland. It also has stunning restaurants dotted everywhere. And for families there is so much to do that no one will ever get bored. For us this area is the ideal holiday destination. And now onto Kurland, if you want a stunning place to stay that really does delight in having children to stay then it is here. Kurland is a stunning polo estate turned hotel. So you have endless green fields full of horses and more lawns than you can shake a stick at. You have so much space to walk around, wonderful picnic spots, areas to explore by quad bike and at the right time watch some fantastic polo. I would like to say there was a favourite thing for us about Kurland but in fact there were endless favourite things. For us the rooms are some of the most beautiful we have stayed in. Seriously gorgeous and incredibly elegant free standing Cape Dutch style cottages. And the family suites couldn’t be better. Downstairs you have the huge bedroom for parents including a wonderfully decadent open fireplace and from here you walk straight out onto your veranda with its private plunge pool. And upstairs (with an internal staircase) you have a fantastic children’s bedroom, beautifully decorated, and with up to 4 beds, its own DVD and a box of toys. Inca actually squealed with delight when she saw her room and refused to leave for 2 hours whilst she had a mock show jumping competition with the box of toy ponies! But for children the delights don’t stop there. In order to keep families happy and your life stress free they have a separate family pool and huge play room away from any couples who might not be as charmed as you by your brood’s dive bombing competition. The huge pool is in a secure walled garden equipped with its own jungle gym and slide leading straight into the water. And just opposite is the best children’s room we have seen. It is fully equipped with all manner of toys for young children and for older ones there is table football, pool, table tennis and DVD. The tennis court even looks onto the children’s room so parents can have a game whilst keeping an eye on their cherubs. For lunch or dinner children can eat in the play room at little tables or in the kitchen with the chef who prepares whatever they want to eat and at the time you want. Our girls had huge fun exploring the veggie garden with the chef selecting and picking what they were going to have for their supper. Young children aren’t allowed in the main dining room for dinner so you can either eat earlier with them, have a baby sitter for the night or eat on your veranda or ask to eat in the rather lovely library in front of a roaring fire whilst the children watch a video the other end of the room . And not forgetting that Plettenberg also has some fantastic restaurants you may want to try out. On top of wonderful rooms, stunning views, riding Shetland ponies, quad biking and all manner of wonderful things Kurland also has some of the most helpful and charming waiters in Africa – nothing is too much trouble for them. Our Opinion As you might have guessed we love Kurland and with the wonderful beaches nearby and so much to do this in one of our favourite sun holidays for families

Rooms

Total:  12 suites
  • Elegant Rooms
  • Luxury Rooms with Loft
  • Superior Suites
  • The superior suites all have private pools, which enjoy magnificent views of the estate, whilst the luxury suites have secluded courtyards and water features.

FAMILY ROOMS… The rooms work brilliantly for families but it depends on the age of your children as to which is the best option. 1. Elegant Rooms. Just two of these and they interconnect. Both rooms are on one level one room has a double bed (made of two singles) and the other room has twin beds. 2. Luxury Rooms with Loft ( 6 of these in total). The Rose Garden rooms look out over the paddocks and the others look over the adults pool and garden area. Some have external stairs to their children’s loft room above (better for older children) and some have internal stairs (steeper than the internal stairs in the Superior Suites). They also have a couple of Luxury Rooms with Loft which interconnect with the room next door. 3. Superior Suites with Loft. These look out over the paddocks. Two of these have beautiful large downstairs bedroom and bathroom leading onto terrace with private plunge pool and then stairs leading up to the childrens room. Our girls were in heaven in the childrens room – with its pretty single beds , childrens toys and their own bathroom. Each childrens room has two or three single beds (but with the option of a cot or an extra single bed if requested). Each also has a play area and toys. Two of the Superior Suites have smaller bedrooms but larger bathrooms and a larger terrace with a plunge pool and an external staircase. These also connect with the other Superior Suite next door. Most suites are two per freestanding cottage. Please do speak to us about which room would suit your family best. The decoration does vary quite a bit from room to room but generally is a beautiful old-english style – some rooms are more feminime than others but again we can try and get you into a room which suits the style you after.

Things to do

  • THINGS TO DO FOR PARENTS…Learn to play polo, indulge in the spa with pevonica beauty products, swimming pool, hiking trails, mountain bikes free of charge, quad bikes free of charge ( + 16 years old), horse riding, tennis court and exploring the beautiful estate. Locally you can visits the beach, scuba dive, fish, canoe trips, black water tubing, motor glider flights, helicopter flips along the Garden route, skydive, visit the snake park – the options are endless.
  • I’M BORED (…& for children)… Learn to ride on a Shetland pony, large dedicated play room equipped with masses of toys linked to outside area with children’s pool and play area and mountain bikes. Our girls particularly enjoyed riding on the back of the Quad bike around the estate with their father, riding on the sweet pony and pushing the dolls in their prams around the estate. There is so much to do at the estate itself you may not leave but Kurland is in a wonderful location for many nearby great family activities such as the beautiful beach, visiting the elephant sanctuary, visiting monkey and bird world, visiting the snake park to name just a few, all of which we were lucky enough to do with our children who loved them all.
  • CHILDREN’S CLUB… Although there is no ‘Kids Club’ you can hire a nanny or baby sitter to look after your cherubs in the play room or out and about around the estate.
  • Useful Stuff

      SUITABLE FOR… All ages.

ARE WE THERE YET?... Kurland is located on the Garden route just outside Plettenberg Bay, Cape Town km 517, George Airport km 102, Port Elizabeth km 200. The easiest way to get here is to fly from Johannesburg (1 ½ hrs) or Cape Town (1/2 hr) to George and then it is a 1 hr drive to the hotel.

I’M HUNGRY… For younger children they can’t eat dinner in the smart dining room but Kurland has plenty of options for them. They can eat in the sweet children's room on the little tables (a favourite with our children) or in the kitchen whilst watching the chef prepare their food. Or in your suite (on the veranda if you want) The chef will prepare anything they like and include lots of fresh produce from the garden. Supper is whenever they want it.
