Our ReviewA great family owned and run lodge with a relaxed atmosphere and superb setting. Although Shooting Star Lodge welcomes families and children, and has a great stretch of beach for playing on, there are no special facilities or activities for children. The lodge is more than happy to provide babysitters and the kitchen staff are certainly able to cater well for children – taking all this is into consideration, the atmosphere is definitely a relaxed and friendly one, so your children will be able to enjoy themselves as much as you! Shooting Star Lodge is perched on top of a coral cliff with fantastic views over Kiwengwa Beach, the views are even better when you are submerged in the cool waters of the lovely infinity pool. The pool is great although it can become very popular throughout the day as the garden and pool area is quite compact, but there is usually loads of space on the beach with plenty of loungers going spare and a few secluded corners where the kids can play happily! The rooms at the lodge are very comfortable and cool, so as the sun gets hotter through the day, they offer a wonderful respite and with plenty of space, the kids can still enjoy a board game or two. The seaview cottages are probably our favourites and have definitely been built and designed with families in mind. The rooms are spread over two floors, with the main bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor with twin beds and a wash basin on the second floor – great for the kids! The lodge also has two suites, Kusi Suite and the Kaskazi Suite. Tucked away in the gardens away from the main lodge with their own private plunge pools, the suites are spread over three floors and are beautifully decorated using traditional Zanzibari furniture. The verandah and pool-deck have dining and lounging areas, as well as a kitchen space so that the lodge's chefs can prepare private meals if required. These suites would be ideal for families but as there are only two of them, booking in advance is highly recommended. The lodge has lovely public areas with plenty of comfortable seating and fantastic views across the Indian Ocean. The dining area is set adjacent to the lounge with views over the pool and meals are generally served here. The food at Shooting Star is good and with the lodge having under gone new management, the quality of food has improved along with new recipes and menu’s. The lodge can easily cater for children but it is always recommend to try and approach the chef early on with any specific requirements. There is also a lovely little beach restaurant with comfortable sofas and cushions if you want lunch by the beach or if you just don’t have the energy to move the kids too far from the comfort of your sandy spot! Diving and snorkeling trips are organised by a nearby PADI scuba centre who will come to the lodge to pick you up, or venture out across the coral reef which unfolds like a carpet at the foot of the beach steps and explore the marine life amongst its tidal pools; visit fishing villages just next door where you'll be warmly welcomed by the inhabitants, or on other days, simply immerse yourself in the balmy waters of the Indian Ocean when the tide is high. You might also like to try a floodlit swim in the crystal clear pools of a limestone cave but then again you might also like to do a bit of absolutely nothing!
