Our Review

Awash with gorgeousness. Heavenly chic in Puglia

White – lots of white, and beautiful floor tiles – heaven. It may just be us but we find the green or similarly brightly coloured tiled flooring, favoured throughout the rest of Italy, a bit dated. But nothing of this nature at the beautiful Mazzia. We had seen pictures of the hotel and heard good reports (including the Conde Nast Hot List) so were prepared to be disappointed if it wasn’t as beautiful as in the pictures. Thankfully it is every bit as stylish and gorgeous as we had hoped. In an area of Italy famous for its hot summers the cooling whites and abundance of flowing linen is just what was called for. The rooms are huge, with vaulted ceilings, modern bathrooms and probably best described as contemporary classic (i.e classic designs in contemporary colours). Even in the standard rooms you have easily enough room for 2 cots and still be able to invite the whole hotel in for drinks! The elegant theme continues throughout the hotel from the restaurant to the bar and one of the most elegant pools in Italy. It is an odd way to describe any hotel by Mazzia is definitely an ‘alfresco’ hotel designed for summer. It isn’t your typical hotel made up of one large building instead the villa styled rooms are in one area of the garden, the open air bar is in another and the alfresco restaurant another. Meaning for those of us who live behind a computer all day you get a revitalising among of fresh air! And due to its layout it is very easier to wheel a buggy around. This really is a grown up hotel for children. Your cherubs are very welcome however it is worth noting that as it isn’t aimed at the family market it doesn’t have a children’s menu, kids club, baby listening or any activities for children. The pool has plenty of shade and good areas for infants and toddlers to crawl around and the restaurant are very happy to provide highchairs and wash bottles. Without masses to keep them entertained there are probably better hotels for older children but we had a very enjoyable stay with Inca and Bea. The other highlight of Mazzia is the beach club. Although the hotel doesn’t lead on to a beach it is within sight of the sea and a 5 minute drive to their very exclusive beach club and their thoughtfully cordoned of section of the sandy beach. And in Italy sandy beaches are very rare so Inca was particularly happy to discover such a beautiful beach. Even the chill out area (very Ibiza) worked well as the uber cool Lamu style loungers are surrounded by sand so your angels can build sandcastles whilst you try to look cool, or at the very least relax. The downside, and to be honest this is the same throughout Europe at good hotels, is that eating and drinking isn’t cheap. But you can’t have everything. Therefore our top tip if you have infants is to take their food with you. And for older children – stick with the pasta.

Things to do

THINGS TO DO FOR PARENTS…The Aveda Spa for a bit of stress relief, some serious chilling at the beach club, golf on the hotel’s course, scuba diving, discover Puglia including the baroque city of Lecce and the ‘White’ city of Ostuni. Or explore the Caves of Castellana and visit Cisternino in the evening. The hotel can also organize picnics in ancient olive groves complete with Persian carpets and a waiter! You can also have a day or half day on the hotel’s own yacht or hire your own motor boat. Or take the family on a bike ride to one of the local little sea ports.

I’M BORED (…& for children)… Other than the swimming pool there isn’t a huge amount for children to do at the hotel but locally there is the beach club and one of the best stretches of beach in Puglia. During the peak summer months they run a Kids Club at the beach. There is also the Zoosafari Park nearby, riding at the Coccaro sister hotel. For older children there is quad biking locally, riding at the sister hotel next door or exploring the working farm – ducks and all!

CHILDREN’S CLUB… The beach club runs a ‘Kids’ club of activities for children during the peak summer months. .

Useful Stuff

SUITABLE FOR ... The hotel has a quiet atmosphere so it is best suited to less ‘energetic’ children.

ARE WE THERE YET?... Fly to either Bari or Brindisi and it is then a 1 – 1 1/5 hour drive.

I’M HUNGRY… As the Maizza isn’t designed with children in mind they don’t have a children’s menu. However they have plenty of pasta dishes etc which most children enjoy. They produce they own hams, mozzarella, pasta, veggies, olive oil and figs on the farm. If you ask in the morning they can produce a simple early supper should your children need it. For infants it is easier to take their food with you. .

BABYSITTING & COSTS…Euro 18 per hour.

COSTS FOR CHILDREN…

PRICES FROM… Euros 188 per person per night B&B (Approx £156) . Please note that in August only children over 10 yrs are allowed.

WHAT YOU DON’T NEED TO PACK…They have cots and high chairs but you will need to take everything else.
