Our ReviewA true hideaway, Waka Shorea is a bit like marmite you either love it or hate, we loved it but it definitely isn’t for everyone. On the North East tip of Bali along the far shore of Teluk Terima, in Bali’s only National Park it feels like another world compared to the bustling South. The camp itself is located on a peninsular reached only by boat ensuring its seclusion. The twenty minute journey from reception based on the mainland opens your eyes to how different it is going to be. You leave a rather depressing, grey black sand beach to soon find yourself over crystal clear water with all sorts of beautiful fish visible below. The rooms are lovely, simple but tastefully decorate located a little way back from the beach on a hillside. The two villas are located right on the beach and worth the extra money for the beach location and extra space. Whilst the second bedroom isn’t of much use to most honeymooners (we hope!) they also have a large open gazebo set just back from the beach as well as your own sunbeds on a deck right in front of the beach. On the night we were staying much to our daughters delight the bit of beach immediately in front of us became a resting spot for a mother deer and her fawn – they literally lay down on the sand in front of our sunbeds. If this all sounds delightful to you, you might be wondering where the marmite bit comes in. It’s a place that suits people looking for a more rustic, nature experience - a chance to be away from it all. However that does mean sacrificing on some points – the service while friendly is extremely laid back. Don’t expect drinks by the pool or cocktails in your room. The food was actually delicious but obviously cooked from scratch to order meaning our good but not complicated food took over an hour to get to us (although they are working on this). The pretty white sand beach is narrow but long and you most definitely won’t find a single hawker on it, you are more likely to come across a wild pig or some cheeky monkeys. It is not pristine in the fact it is not swept and jelly shoes are a good idea as some of the coral is quite sharp. The highlight for us during our stay was the wonderful snorkelling available directly from the beach. They have a great range of excellent masks, snorkels and fins that you can help yourself to and then head off. On our short snorkel from the end of the pier to the shore we spotted sand sharks, angel fish, parrot fish, bat fish, blue star fish and all sorts of other fish I that I have no idea what they were called. The water is so clear you can also spot most of these by peering over the pier. Further excellent snorkelling is just a short boat trip away. This is also a great area for diving (check Waka Shorea dive school) If you come here expecting a pretty, relaxed island hideaway you will love it, if you are coming here expecting the Four Seasons it is unlikely to suit you.
