Our Review

A great beach lodge, stylish but affordable. Many beach lodges in Africa focus on couples but here they really do actively encourage children and during school holidays you will find almost all the guests are families. Which is fantastic for everyone. Your children will meet new friends and have hours of fun playing on the beach or around the pool. They even have a small children’s play room for the youngest members of the family, in fact we struggled to get Inca and Bea out of here – especially when they had made a few little friends who also wanted to play with the building blocks all morning! And for slightly older children they do their best to keep them entertained all day long with cookie baking, face painting, treasure hunts, shell collecting to name but a few of the activities on offer. We loved the rooms and for that matter the whole look and feel to Rocktail Bay. The food is simple and the beach is admittedly a 15 minute walk away (although they will give you a lift down) but this incredible beach lodge is a real gem. As you might hope of a beach lodge it is wonderfully laid back and you therefore don’t feel awkward if your children are diving in and out of the pool or running around having fun. And the pool is a great size for children to play in with a good shallow end and plenty of space for demonstrating new found diving skills. The rooms themselves are huge, seriously lovely tents on decking hidden in the marine forest around the camp. The family rooms have two bedrooms separated by a bathroom (showers only as water is very precious here, although they did bring in a baby bath for our youngest which she loved). The style is best described as ‘beach chic’ laidback but as luxurious as you want on the beach. The main lodge has a huge lounge area with plenty of games for the children and a large deck surrounding it for al fresco dining (although it does have a canopy roof to keep the sun off! As we found this area works perfectly for dinner – children can head inside to play board games whilst parents can have a relaxed supper keeping half an eye on them (our in our girls case fall asleep on a sofa!). If you prefer the camp will organise early suppers and a baby sitter for you. Food here is a simple buffet for every meal which tends to suit children perfectly and supper starts at 7 pm so you can all eat together in good time. The highlight to Rocktail Bay is undoubtedly the miles of beautiful, unspoilt beach. As you are well away from anywhere you therefore get the beach to yourselves. Although unsheltered there are a couple of lagoons near by that mean smaller children can swim and snorkel safely. For older children and parents the diving here is some of the best in Southern Africa with incredible unspoilt coral reefs and wonderful sightings of whale sharks and dolphins at the right time of year. They even run dive courses in the pool for beginners. And from October onwards you can even take night safaris to see the turtles coming up the beach to lay their eggs. This is a real winner with the children and they can even adopt their own turtle. Other activities include birding, fishing, excursions to Lake Sibuya and the local community or horse riding, quad biking and hiking nearby. Hazards... There is a drop off the deck from your tent. Our Opinion We loved this lodge. We thought the design was wonderful and the facilities fantastic. This could easily be a seriously expensive 5* beach lodge but by keeping the cuisine simple and things a little more low key they have been able to keep the cost to an incredibly low rate. It is half the cost of the Thonga lodge next door but far more stylish. You have to decide whether the distance to the beach is an issue for you or not.

Things to do

  • THINGS TO DO FOR PARENTS…Diving, snorkeling and just chilling out on the incredible beach, beach and forest walks, beach picnics, fishing, turtle drives (mid October - March), excursions to Lake Sibaya, trips to the Gugulesizwe Community Centre (extra cost).
  • I’M BORED (…& for children)…All of the above, children are also happily entertained at the lodge itself with the lovely pool and play room just next door. They do lots of great activities to keep children happy.
  • CHILDREN’S CLUB… There is no children’s club as such but they do have the playroom with lots of games.
  • Useful Stuff

SUITABLE FOR… It is great for families with children of all ages, however it is considered a low risk malaria area so that should be taken into consideration for very young children. The beach is a fifteen minute walk away, but can end up being a much longer walk with young children, however they will give you a lift and pick you up if you let them know in advance

ARE WE THERE YET?... Approximate travelling times from: Durban airport - 6 hours, Richards Bay - 5 hours, Johannesburg airport - 7 hours. You can either choose to self-drive or they can organize a transfer for you.

I’M HUNGRY… The lodge does have a children's menu available which can be sent to the room or enjoyed in the play room if parents prefer the children not to have meals in the main dining room. Children are welcome to join parents in the dining room at anytime and dinner is served from 7pm.

BABYSITTING & COSTS… Babysitters are available and it is better to request before you arrive. For babysitters during the evening the lodge needs to know before 12 noon in the afternoon. The cost is ZAR30 per hour (approx £4).

COSTS FOR CHILDREN… Children aged 0-5yrs are accommodated free of charge but will need to pay park fees of ZAR10 (approx £1).  Children aged 6-12yrs pay ZAR844 per night (approx £69) inclusive of dinner and breakfast.

PRICES FROM…(dependant on ROE) ZAR1644.00 per person per night (approx £135) inclusive of dinner and breakfast. Cost for 2 adults and 2 children from ZAR4,975.50 per night (approx £408) on Half Board.

WHAT YOU DON’T NEED TO PACK… The lodge can provide babycots, linen and baby baths - subject to availability. The lodge is also able to assist in washing baby bottles and also have a steriliser in the kitchen. The lodge can provide buckets, spades, bats & balls, boomerangs and loads more other toys.

RESTAURANTS....There is only one restaurant at Rocktail.
