Our Review

Londolozi offers some of the best children’s activities we have seen at a safari lodge. It makes a huge difference to a camp when the owners run it. And that is what you really see at Londolozi. The Varty family have lived here for 82 years and this is where their children (lucky things) grew up. They were the pioneers of wildlife conservation in South Africa and have an incredible love for the bush. To them Londolozi has always been about you, the guests, and making sure that you fall in love with the Africa they have been privileged to grow up in. It is this connection to the lodge that gives it a completely different atmosphere to many of the other camps. The staff here are incredibly welcoming and happy. They adore working at Londolozi and really feel a part of the family and the whole magic that makes this place work. There are 5 lodges in total, all small (2 camps have just 3 rooms), catering for different clients. Founders Camp and Varty Camp are the original camps and are run with families as their main clients. In Tree Camp and Granite Suites you get couples and if you want the ultimate in African luxury you head to Pioneer Camp which has 3 of the most amazing suites for either families or couples but never mixing the two. And so you will never get a grumpy couple scowling at your cherubs running around as every guest knows that your camp is a family camp. Varty camp also happened to be where the two Varty children grew up so they really know what families want and need on safari. They have babysitters, inter-leading rooms, early suppers, guides that specialise in taking out children and they even have their Cubs Den. This is the real winner at Londo and the reason we would almost pick this camp over any other. They understand that when not on safari children need something to do. And they also understand that all children are different and want to do different things so their programmes are completely flexible. When you arrive they will discuss with you and your family what the children would like to do whilst they are there and then put together activities you can all do together or if you want some time to relax alone they will whisk the children off to do their own fun things. The Cubs programme is run by the rangers and a fully qualified teacher so the children get to learn about the animals, local culture, surviving in bush as well as making new friends. Other than the wonderful camps the main reason to come to Londo is the game. With one of the largest private areas in the Sabi Sands Reserve (18,000 sq hectares) you get some of the best game viewing in South Africa. The bush here is more open than in the north so it is easier to find the game. They have huge numbers of buffalo, elephant, lion as well as the plains game and leopard. A safari at Londolozi is a real treat. It is worth noting that the camp is unfenced on purpose. The Varty children grew up here without any problems but the family believe that if a cat or animal gets trapped within a fence it is a more serious threat then if they are allowed to more out freely. Wild animals will try to avoid humans and the camps anyway. At night you still need to be aware of this and that is why their interleading rooms work well. Our Opinion This isn’t a cheap option but it is hard to beat Londolozi for families. There are few places that have as good game viewing as here. And when you combine that with two camps that actual specialise in family safaris and the huge amount of activities on offer for children you can see why they have so many families that return year after year. The hard choice is do you go here or an exclusive use camp. The benefit to Londolozi is that they have the activities for children you don’t get anywhere else. Safari The safaris here are amazing. With 18,000 sq hectares of exclusive use reserve you won't be bumping into anyone else. The game here is also the envy of every other SA camp. Children can go on game drives at 6 yrs + (subject to rangers approval) , and with 10 vehicles they do try to sit families together or give you your own vehicle. However if you want to take 4 or 5 year olds out on a drive and you want to be guaranteed your own car then you can take an exclusive use vehicle. The Cubs programme is designed by their in house qualified teacher, their specialist family guides (who have their own children) and the Varty children. Bronwyn and her brother want the children staying here to experience what they experienced. So there is rifle shooting, learning Shangaan, learning to drive landrovers, catch butterflies, identify plants and learn what medicines they make, meeting local school children. And for younger children paper mache, candle making, baking, learning to track, bug catching, bird watching, African dancing, arts and crafts. And in the Cubs Den they can play in the sand pit, clamber over the landrover, hide in the tent, play in the rock pool, paint in the shade or bead making. There is masses to do and the list is endless. At Londolozi they try and combine children’s thirst for knowledge with educational intervention – i.e teaching children something valuable and worthwhile whilst being fun at the same time. Most of this happens out in the bush and the actual Den is just to give the smaller children somewhere safe and secure to play in the shade on hot days. Bushveld excursions are guided by the Cub Coach, a dedicated and expert naturalist, who oversees all the children’s activities and can make even dung spitting seem like a palatable idea! They understand that game drives can be long for children and as they are on private land and not restricted by Park rules they therefore have the flexibility to stop regularly to let children hop out and look at spore or use all their senses – touching, feeling, smelling, throwing – it all comes into the mix. The drives here are a learning experience for little ones and a place where the family can interact together.
