Our Review

We often think that the most important aspect of a European beach holiday is having a beach you can easily get to.  Finding good hotels which have a lovely beach just in front of them is harder than you think.  But here they have a great beach – just metres away from the hotel’s swimming pool.  So you don’t have to trek miles with your little treasurers to build a sand castle. The ‘village’ hotel concept is quiet common but rarely done so well.  The Martinhal comprises of a number of privately owned villas, which you can rent and are serviced by the hotel,  1-3 bedroomed apartments spread out around a central core and the hotel itself on the edge of a hill running down to the beach.  For families after more independence the apartments all have kitchenettes and more space then you would get in a standard hotel room.  The hotel itself has some terraced rooms in the main building but the majority of rooms are in 2 storey cottages in the garden – with views of the sea.  These cottages have two rooms, one above the other.  Top floor rooms are for older children and the ground floor rooms have small terraces and their own bit of lawn with sunbeds – ideal if you need to stay by your room whilst younger children have a nap.

The hotel has its own lovely pool surrounded by decking and grass and a gigantic sand pit next door with its own trampoline to keep the more active happy.   Next to the main pool and there is an unshaded children’s pool as well as their beach restaurant - ideal for lunch or early dinners.   And for mothers with buggies there are ramps everywhere so you don’t need to struggle with your pushchair.

We really liked this hotel.  The feel is that of an adults hotel but one which really makes families welcome.  Being built in a nature reserve means you have great views and plenty of space and there aren’t tower blocks looming over you or building sites next door!  The rooms are contemporary and in a great location with good terraces and wonderful views.  They aren’t huge, so adding extra beds is a struggle but they do easily fit a cot and you can have interconnecting rooms.  If you have more children, or older children, then the village rooms are perfect.  See our rooms description for all the different types.

There is also a fantastic Kids club with indoor and outdoor play areas and a crèche for 6 mths – 2 yrs old.  And for parents who just want somewhere to entertain their children, out of the sun, there is a Blue Room full of toys and an outdoor play area.  The village has a number of different pools include one indoor/outdoor option and a shaded childrens’ pool.  Or if you prefer to head down to the beach you can walk down there or hop  in the car and drive to the bottom of the hill where there is plenty of free parking right on the beach.

There are some great restaurants to choose from or you can nip into the village supermarket and cook in your apartment if you prefer.

If you are looking for an easy beach holiday at a stylish hotel then this is a great option.

The Village

The Village is based around a central hub which includes a restaurants, the Children’s club and two pools.  There are 1, 2 and 3 bedroomed villas available.  The different views dictate villa category and price.  There are also a number of private villas available for rent.

Ocean Houses:  these have a prime position right at the heart of the resort.  Carefully arranged in small terraced groups at the front of Martinhal Village they overlook the hotel.   The villa is upside down, with living spaces created upstairs to take full advantage of the incredible sea views.   Ocean Houses have their own private verandas where guests can enjoy al fresco meals overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and watch the sun set in splendour. It is an outstanding location: the beach is on the doorstep as are all the resort’s leisure and entertainment facilities.  55 Ocean Houses are available, with 49 two-bedroom Grand Deluxe and 6 three-bedroom Master Deluxe options.

The Bay Houses:  are located on the eastern margin of the resort and are the most spacious and secluded properties in Martinhal Village. The houses have been designed upside down, with living areas on the first floor to make the most of the unspoiled location with views out across the nature reserve.  Furthermore, they have an east-west orientation and allow the best views from both sides – with beautiful sunrises and spectacular sunsets.  A total of 12 Bay Houses are available to rent, with 6 two-bedroom Grand Deluxe and 6 three-bedroom Master Deluxe options.

Garden Houses:  Arranged around a garden in the centre of the village, the Garden Houses are substantial semi-detached villas set within the perimeter of a large walled garden.
Private verandas overlook a central feature of the garden – the Oasis Pool, a heated free-form swimming pool.   A total of 39 Garden Houses are available, with 10 one-bedroom Deluxe, 20 two-bedroom Grand Deluxe and 9 three-bedroom Master Deluxe options.

The Pinewoods Houses: positioned in their own separate close. Arranged along the edge of a pine forest, these linked villas enjoy a private location but remain within easy access of the main resort facilities.  Each house has its own small, private swimming pool and garden.
Pinewoods Houses appeal to families who appreciate a degree of seclusion but still like to be near the resort’s leisure and entertainment attractions. There are 10 Pinewoods Houses available, with 6 two-bedroom Grand Deluxe and 4 three-bedroom Master Deluxe options.

FAMILY ROOMS...

The Villas work perfectly for families.  In the hotel the Terrace rooms don’t interconnect and can only fit an extra cot.  There is one Terrace room which can fit an extra bed.  A normal baby monitor will stretch to the Fine Dining restaurant just above these rooms.  The Beach Rooms can only fit an extra cot.  There are two beach suites which interconnect with a Beach Room.  Arranged in clusters of four rooms the two ground floor Beach Rooms have their own terrace with two sunbeds which are ideal for catching up on some sunbathing whilst your baby is having an afternoon nap.  The ‘Sea View’ rooms have the most private terraces as no one walks in front of them.  The ‘Partial Sea View’ rooms have a path in front of them.  The Beach Suites have a large living room with outside terrace and a mezzanine bedroom.  The living room is an ideal spot for a cot.  Note: there are wooden steps up to the bedroom which could be a hazard to crawling escapees.

Things to do

THINGS TO DO FOR PARENTS… There is plenty to do to keep everyone happyThe Finisterra Spa is a great option for stressed mothers in needof some pampering.  Otherwise there are great hikes and bike riding to do around the nature reserve, tennis, paddle tennis, gym, kayaking, paddle surfing, windsurfing, diving, bird watching, blokarting (which is a seriously fun 3 wheel cart and windsail).  Nearby there is rock climbing in the Natural Park of Costa Vincentina, golf, riding, boat trips, deep sea fishing, kite surfing, body boarding, boat trips and even a surf school.

I'M BORED (...& for children) For older children you have all the activities mentioned above as well as a football clinic over the summer months.  The Martinhal Bay is ideal for watersports and the Sports centre has instructors for most activities.  Club 98 is the resort’s tennis and sports club and for teenagers the Blue Room has the latest videos games or more traditional activities such as table tennis.  And for younger children there is even a playground to keep them entertained.

CHILDREN’S CLUB… Raposinhos” means “little fox” and children here are encouraged to be the same – active and inquisitive. The club has lots of toys, games and puzzles to keep tiny minds occupied.  The Crèche caters for children from 6 to 23 months and the Kids Club caters for children from 2 to 4 years.  During the school holidays, the 5 to 8 year olds are catered for in the Fox Club, which has a program with indoor and outdoor supervised activities that will spark the interest of this age group.  All Clubs are centrally located at the Village Square and are run by an experienced and enthusiastic team who will ensure your child has a holiday to remember at Martinhal.

Please note that for all Children’s Club there is a limited number of spaces available. To guarantee a space for your child, we recommend you pre-book your sessions. Bookings are accepted on availability.

During the summer months, Raposinhos also organises outdoor & indoor evening surprises to entertain children while parents enjoy their dinner.  Toddlers at Raposinhos can try their hand at face painting or join an outdoor treasure hunt.  Simple arts and crafts using everyday materials works wonders for the imagination, and youngsters can spend hours making all sorts of colourful items to show proud parents.

Activities like T-Shirt printing and cookery classes will spark the interest of older children. And the picnics held in the grounds are always a big hit

Costs are: The Creche €12.50 per hour (morning and afternoon sessions)  The Kids Club is € per session and the Fox Club is €10 per session.
