Greece has something for everyone and for every family. Whether you prefer stunning landscape, crystal clear seas, powder soft sand or a bit of culture. And with a myriad of islands to explore as well as the mainland itself you will never be short of choice. We love Greece and have always been impressed how well it works for families. You can stay at stunning 5* hotels and head out in the evening to little taverners on the beach where you can have relaxing dinners whilst the children play on the sand. Here we have included some of our favourite places from the uber cool and wonder Mykonos, with its great shopping, stunning views and incredible restaurants to the best beaches in Europe on the Halkidiki Peninsular.

    Crete, Greece

This is one of our favourite hotels in Europe for families. It may not be a boutique hotel but for stressed out parents wanting a hotel to cater perfectly for families whilst still being the type of hotel they want to stay in then this is it. Based an extremely easy 20 minute drive from Heraklion airport means that there is no lengthy transfer for tired children. And unlike many hotels in Crete it does have its own sandy beach.

Suitable for: All families - a gorgeous hotel for adults that really caters well for families.

        Elounda Coast, Crete, Greece

Elounda is the play ground for Crete’s rich and famous. The gin clear water and rocky coastline give this area dramatic scenery and stunning views. And the most family friendly of the incredible 5* hotels here is easily the wonderful Blue Palace. Delicious food, a great Kids Club and lovely rooms mean that you as parents will love your stay here whilst you little ones are kept entertained. And whilst it doesn’t have a sandy beach it does have the most immaculately manicured pebble beach we have ever seen.

Suitable for: Families who like the choice of facilities and restaurants that a larger hotel has to offer.

          Crete, Greece

Enjoyment of a hotel is most often due to the staff. And this is one hotel where they really do make the difference. Run by the amazing Costas who has been at the helm since the start and is a proper old school hotel manager with a real love for his hotel, staff and most importantly his guests. For a hotel that has been here for so long we were incredibly impressed that it still looks immaculate and with a contemporary style to the rooms that older hotels often lack.

Suitable for: Best for families with children young enough to be happy with small stretch of beach for sandcastles. p>

          When to Travel

From early May to the middle of October tends to be the best time to visit.  As with all Mediterranean destinations August can be very hot and therefore probably not ideal for very young children.  May, June and September are wonderful months to visit when the days are lovely and warm and the school holiday crowds aren’t around.

Gin clear water, lovely sandy beaches and easy flights mean that Greece has long been a popular destination for families.   There are  numerous islands dotted throughout the Aegean to choose from depending on what you are after.  The uber cool Mykonos, out of the main season of July and August, is a fantastic place for a family holiday with lovely sandy beaches.  It is worth noting that a number of islands only have pebble beaches which don’t make sand castle building very easy!  We have selected the hotel in Greece on the basis that they all have their own sandy beach.  Head up north to the Halidiki Peninsular for some of the best beaches in Greece and the wonderful family resort of Porto Sani – which for us is probably the top family hotel(s) in Europe.  Here the endless beach has soft white sand which gentle shelves into the sea.

          Country Info

Flights:  Most of the islands are connected with direct UK flights on the low cost carriers.  Olympic Air and Aegean Air connect all of the islands via Athens

An island of two parts – the north west has wonderful sandy beaches and mountain ranges dotted with caves and sliced by dramatic gorges. Whilst the chic north east coast is lined with the uber gorgeous hotels of Elounda where the Greek jet set head. Oddly enough these often very family friendly hotels have large pebble beaches, not every young castle makers ideal medium.

A surprise find for us and one that is now a firm favourite.  This ‘party’ island out of the July and August season is a really lovely place to visit.  Square whitewashed buildings are the only style allowed which give the island its unique look. And the sandy beaches couldn’t be better for families.  Traveling in the quieter months, for those families that can, mean you have the same wonderful shops and restaurants that make Mykonos so popular but without the crowds.  On some of the more hidden of the Greek islands you struggle to find decent hotels or good restaurants.  Which is why we so adore Mykonos.

We know it is often difficult, with the huge number of hotels out there, to know which one to go for, which combines with which and what sort of costs they are going to be. Here we have put together a few of our favourite options to give you a starting point. Any of these options can be changed, tweeked or added to so please do ask. The prices are per person and include international flights and private transfers. As the rates at all hotels change a great deal from their High Seasons (i.e the most popular times of the year to be there) to their Low Seasons (they often have great discounts at this time) we have based the 'From' costs on a good time of year to be in the country, the dates are included in the text at the bottom. Please do call us for a quote based on your dates.
