Family Hotels in the Maldives

The Maldives is all about sun, sand and sea. And we think, for families after a beach holiday, there are few places to rival the Maldives especially for families with younger children. The sea is clear with gently shelving beaches and great snorkelling. Each hotel is set on its own small private island. The emphasis is on water-based activities and the diving is some of the best in the world. Famous for its over water villas, you can step straight from your private veranda into the gentle waters of a crystal clear lagoon, although these aren’t recommended for younger children. The islands of the Maldives aren’t huge and therefore some hotels on the smaller islands don’t have the space for land based activities. For families of older children we recommend hotels on the bigger islands so that there is plenty to keep them occupied.

When to Travel

The temperatures in the Maldives stay fairly constant throughout the year, on average between 27 – 30C.

May – November is the rainy season when you might expect daily tropical showers but rarely full days of rain (the clouds tend to build up in the late afternoon and then rain over night).  There is normally still plenty of sunshine to be had.

Christmas, Easter and Chinese New Year are high season in the Maldives and hotels get booked up well in advance.

Kids

The Maldives are a real winner for children.  With direct BA and Sri Lankan Airways flights straight to Male you don’t have any ‘transiting’ issues.  The wonderful beaches, soft white sand and clear blue waters are perfect for family holidays.  In fact we would say that with very young children there is hardly anywhere better.  Choosing your hotel or island is very important and differs with each age group and each family.  The smaller ‘boutique’ hotels tend to be on smaller island and therefore there is less space for activities to keep older children happy.  If you have infants and very young children who just need sand and shade to keep them happy then there are lots of options for you.  Most of the hotels are very experienced in dealing with children and can provide most of the basics you will need.  A few hotels such as the wonderful Conrad, have Kids Clubs, which are a great place for older children to spend a few hours out of the sun.  The Conrad is also one of the larger islands so has numerous activities for all ages and plenty of different places to eat.

Country Info

Flights: Direct with British Airways & Sri Lankan Air.  Indirect flights with Emirates via Dubai (which makes a fun stop over).

Food and drink

The Maldives has a huge variety of culinary influences on it with particular focus on delicious seafood and fish.  Hotels offer a wide range of different food – perfect for all ages groups.  From delicious Asian and European cuisine to staple children’s menus including such winners as spaghetti bolognaise for discerning younger palettes.   Most resorts offer a Half Board and Full Board option and some offer All Inclusive (although this is quite rare with 5* properties).  These are often buffet options in the main restaurants and you get a credit to use at the other ‘A La Carte’ restaurants.  We always recommend Half Board as this includes supper (which you are normally always going to have).      It is worth noting that all drinks are imported and prices for alcoholic drinks can be high.

Other

It is easy to forget your are in an Islamic country but whilst alcohol and bikinis are acceptable in your hotel it is worth noting that the inhabited islands such as Male insist on local customs being respected.  Therefore it is recommended that women where modest clothing whilst visiting these island.

Suggested Itineraries

We know it is often difficult, with the huge number of hotels out there, to know which one to go for, which combines with which and what sort of costs they are going to be. Here we have put together a few of our favourite options to give you a starting point. Any of these options can be changed, tweeked or added to so please do ask. The prices are per person and include international flights and private transfers. As the rates at all hotels change a great deal from their High Seasons (i.e the most popular times of the year to be there) to their Low Seasons (they often have great discounts at this time) we have based the 'From' costs on a good time of year to be in the country, the dates are included in the text at the bottom. Please do call us for a quote based on your dates.
