      Family Hotels in Mauritius

Few places can beat Mauritius for a family holiday. The weather is hot without ever being unbearable and the island has a huge amount to do both on land and in the sea for children and adults. The beaches on the east coast are wide and long and protected by a coral reef. The food is delicious and a wonderful fusion of the French, Indian, English and Chinese influences on the island. Whilst, for us, the service is genuinely some of the best and most friendly of any destination we have visited. It isn’t a ‘hideaway destination’ with hidden beaches but for families wanting hotels offering plenty to entertain their children and still be luxurious for adults it is one of the ideal options. The minimal jet lag also helps keep bedtimes to roughly the same time and the huge range of complimentary water sports means your family will be entertained without it costing you a fortune. Mauritius has two main seasons with their winter months running from May to September. During July and August the prevailing easterly winds make the east coast a couple of degrees cooler then the west and the seas are a bit rougher. Winter in Mauritius produces lovely warm days

      When to Travel

Mauritius has a warm subtropical climate.

Their hot dry season is from May to October with temperatures ranging from 20C to 25C. Cooling trade winds blow from the southeast and keep down the humidity levels. During July and August the prevailing easterly winds make the east coast a couple of degrees cooler then the west and the seas are a bit rougher.

From November to April the climate becomes hotter, more humid and temperatures range from around 25C to 30C. This is their rainy season, with the peak rains and occasional cyclones occurring in January and February, when we do not recommend travel.

      Kids

For us nowhere works better for families, as a destination, then Mauritius.  Almost all the hotels are set up for families so have the facilities you need to keep your children entertained and you relaxed.  They all have babysitters, kids clubs, restaurant which open in time for early suppers, interconnecting rooms and above all staff who enjoy having families in the hotel.  The beaches in Mauritius are wide and long and sheltered by a reef around the majority of the island.  Most hotels offer complimentary watersports and kids clubs.  These tend to be for children over the age of 3.  Younger children need to be accompanied by a parent or babysitter.  This is to ensure the younger children aren’t forgotten when staff are coping with more boisterous older children.

Out an about on the island there are also plenty of activities for older children including golf, quad biking, hiking, and cycling.

The medical facilities on the island are also very easy to get to in case of any emergency.  Most hotels have their own in-house doctor.

      Country Info

Flights: There are direct non stop flights from the UK to Mauritius with British Airways and Air Mauritius on most days of the week.  Emirates also runs a very good indirect service.  Or if you are coming from South Africa SAA and Air Mauritius have daily flights.

Mauritius is located in the Indian Ocean about 800km east of Madagascar and 2,000 km off the nearest point of the African mainland. The island is mostly of volcanic formation and is almost entirely surrounded by coral reefs.  The mountain range in the south of the island is a great place for hiking and exploring.

Due to the prevailing winds the beaches on the east of the island are wide and long and those on the west of the island tend to be narrower and in small coves.

      Food and drink

With strong influences from Africa, Indian, China, England and France the food in Mauritius is varied and very good.  Wine tends to come in from South Africa which also supplies all their meat.  Therefore, unlike the other Indian Ocean  islands, the food in Mauritius is so heavily reliant on fish and seafood.  All hotels offer simply Kid’s Menus.

      Suggested Itineraries

We know it is often difficult, with the huge number of hotels out there, to know which one to go for, which combines with which and what sort of costs they are going to be. Here we have put together a few of our favourite options to give you a starting point. Any of these options can be changed, tweeked or added to so please do ask. The prices are per person and include international flights and private transfers. As the rates at all hotels change a great deal from their High Seasons (i.e the most popular times of the year to be there) to their Low Seasons (they often have great discounts at this time) we have based the 'From' costs on a good time of year to be in the country, the dates are included in the text at the bottom. Please do call us for a quote based on your dates.
