    Family Hotels in Mozambique

Mozambique offers a less well known family beach destination. The miles upon miles of rugged coastline offers beautiful, undeveloped beaches. Two of Mozambique’s archipelagos – the Bazaruto and Quirimba Archipelagos have a number of small, beach lodges on. With cottages set along the beach the lodges offer a relaxed, barefoot luxury. For families keen to escape the normal family hot spots Mozambique makes a great alternative.

Due to the presence of Malaria Mozambique is not recommended for younger children. Southern Mozambique combines with a direct flight from the Kruger in South Africa for families wanting to go to the beach after their safari.

    Bazaruto Island, Mozambique

Indigo Bay is situated on the Island of Bazaruto, in the heart of the Bazaruto Archipelago. Mozambique is a great beach destination to combine with a safari in South Africa and with flights directly from the Kruger it is relatively easy to reach. Indigo Bay is the ideal family choice. The beautiful island is very unspoilt yet the hotel still manages to offer the range of activities and facilities that you expect of a larger hotel.

Suitable for: Children of all ages however as it is in a malaria area please consult your GP.

    When to Travel

Mozambique has a warm tropical climate with large regional variations in climate between North and South. The Quirimba Archipelago in Northern Mozambique has a dry season that runs roughly from May to November, with the chance of a few rain showers in September. July has the lowest temperatures of about 28C and the highest are in November when it can be over 30C. The rainy season is normally from December to the end of May (February & April are the wettest months) Down in the south the weather is similar to South Africa. In the Bazaruto Archipelago it is the dry season from April to October with the coolest months in July and August (but also the driest). Temperatures are typically around 25C. By October the temperatures rise to around 30C. The rains start in November and run to the end of March. The wettest and hottest months are January and February where it can often reach 38C.

    Kids

Mozambique is a malaria area so unsuitable for pregnant mothers or young children.  In general the boutique hotels of Mozambique are designed for couples.  However the beaches here combine very well with a safari in Tanzania or South Africa and most hotels are full of families during the school holidays.  The hotels are designed to be similar in style and feel to safari camps so don’t have the level of facilities that say Mauritian hotels have.  If your brood are like ours then playing on the beach all day is entertainment enough.  The beach lodges have minimal children’s facilities and don’t therefore have Kids Clubs.

    Country Info

Flights: there are no direct flights to Mozambique from the UK.  Flights are either via Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam or for southern Mozambique – Johannesburg.  From your point of entry into the country you will then have a short onward flight to your lodge.

The coast line of Mozambique is the same length as the west coast of the USA.  This gives you some idea of how far Mozambique stretches down the African Coast.  It starts in the north where it borders Tanzania and runs almost all the way down to Durban in South Africa.  The two main archipelagos of Bazaruto and Quirimba have the best beaches in Mozambique and a number of top class beach lodges.  On the main land there are more low key beach lodges.  And the new ‘White Pearl’ resort has just opened its doors on the main coast south of Maputo and just east of the Kruger national Park in South Africa.

For many years the country was ravaged by civil war and whilst that has now been and gone the wild life has struggled to return.  And hence there are limited safari options in Mozambique.  A number of projects have been started in recent years to return the wildlife to its previously levels.  This is still an ongoing project but where the border meets the southern Tanzanian reserve of the Selous you have good game levels.

    Food and drink

Mozambique has been heavily influenced by Portugal over the years and most lodges produce international cuisine.  There is a good helping of delicious fresh seafood and fish (as you might imagine) but the majority of food and drink come in from South Africa so everyone is catered for.

    Things to do

As there are still better places to go on safari we would recommend combining these with a beach stop in Mozambique.  The boutique lodges whilst having plenty of space also have limited facilities.  The beach, sand dunes and sea are the main attractions.  You can head off deep sea fishing or take a picnic on to a deserted beach.  Mozambique is somewhere to escape the tourists and have miles of endless beach to yourselves.

    Suggested Itineraries

We know it is often difficult, with the huge number of hotels out there, to know which one to go for, which combines with which and what sort of costs they are going to be. Here we have put together a few of our favourite options to give you a starting point. Any of these options can be changed, tweeked or added to so please do ask. The prices are per person and include international flights and private transfers. As the rates at all hotels change a great deal from their High Seasons (i.e the most popular times of the year to be there) to their Low Seasons (they often have great discounts at this time) we have based the 'From' costs on a good time of year to be in the country, the dates are included in the text at the bottom. Please do call us for a quote based on your dates.
