Wonderful family friendly hotels with fantastic summer offers
The constant search for a nice beach hotel in Europe has just taken us to Puglia - the 'heel' of Italy. The problem about the west coast of Italy is there are very few sandy beaches so heading to the east coast is the best option. For some reason there appear to be very few good hotels in this region but the 4 or so that are really good are next to each other! Anyway we dragged Inca and Bea along to test the waters, so to speak.
September really is a lovely time to be in Italy as the temperature is much better for children than hot August and you can still eat outside in the evenings without getting cold. Our favourite hotel for children was the wonderful Masseria Torre Cocarro. This beautiful, typically Puglian, former fortified farm has sweet rooms and the best children’s’ pool in Italy. It gently shelves in so that even infants can paddle around in the shallows.
Possibly the only downside is the hotel isn't directly on the beach but a very easy 5 minute drive gets you to their private beach club with a beautifully sandy beach, great restaurant and even a Kids Beach Club running during the summer. Eating here isn’t cheap (like so many European hotels) but it is worth a visit in May, June or September for some out of season sun.
